Zombies: Return of the Disco Dead!!!

Further to the fact that the previous ZOMBIES post got so much interest, these are the first two pages of artwork I did for the BITENECK BEATNIKS: DAWN OF THE DISCO DEAD comic I was working on. By the time I'd got to that 3rd page I was beginning to find my feet, albeit still a way off from "match fitness". All new to me, the comics genre, in so much as being an artist- I've been a comics fan for years but this was my first stab at actually doing one. As such, it's probably a little naive but was great fun to work on.

Almost tempted to take a fresh run at it, but there aren't currently the hours in the day. If you have any thoughts on what should be going in the caption bubbles do dive in! :-)

Bada Bling!

Lovely lovely stuff.
Have you ever seen any of Ulf K's comics? I think you'd like.
Sorry for always recommending stuff, I am a bookseller though!

Don't know him, Paul - any linky goodness? Have to say Mr Culbard is one of my biggest influences (the big guy will probably blush at that) as well as numerous dailies like Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side.

Thornaby *shudder* You're not wrong....

This is really impressive work, Mr. Bling, and quite a riot, I mean, what an outlandish premise, Dawn of the Disco Dead!

Love the look of the black and white. However, I'm curios, any possible color in the immediate future?

Well you can't go wrong with Calvin and Hobbes (if you like dailies I hope you're enjoying 'Mutts'!).
Learn (a little) about Ulf K at http://www.lambiek.net/artists/k/keyenburg.htm Don't know how easy it'd be to get hold of his stuff but his publisher's at www.bries.be so that'd be a good place to start.... if you like his stuff of course!

JP- the only colour work for the Biteneck Beatniks is the paintings collection, which you'll find in the archives from when I first started the BADABLINGTHING blog. Have a rummage back there! No plans for colour art in the comic as of yet, as it's all about solid colour.

Paul- Ulf's stuff is great, really nice. May well have to dig some of that out and have a reccy. I'm trying to find a way of working with a more "economical line" if that makes any sense. I don't want the BB designs to get too fiddly.

Totaly sense.
Glad you like his stuff, 'Tango With Death' is a good place to start, but it's all good.

Tango with Death was the first book I purchased at P45 when I came to Nottingham. Great book.

I have a slate clear for dev work on this after the 4th of August.

Which isn't too far away. So we should start to see what world these chaps live in about mid way through Aug.

Mmm, fresh zombie goodness.
More great stuff Mr. Jobling, and so glad I hung back on posting Page 3 over at Zombiedollar$, now I can post all three and get the kids all excited.
Fair play for having a crack at comics, a successful one at that judging by these pages. Comics are so much harder to get right than people think, definitely agree that storytelling is a completely seperate skill to just being able to draw, and if you don't have that storytelling ability things can get pretty messy. They say the key is you should be able to follow the story without the words and these pages show that.
Cracking.

Right, off to trawl every post now to fill in the blanks on Biteneck Beatniks.

Then I'll be checking out Ulf K.

Then I'll be wanting to do my own Zombie Strip of course...

INJun, good to hear of availability- we can start giving these good folk what they want soon, hopefully! :-D Ian is going to bring his own perspective to the world of the BB's.

Donnachada- just checked out your site. Now THAT is economical use of line. Wonderful Miro-esque stuff! So are you from Ireland but now working in US? If so which studio?

Sheriff- sorry to hear of loss, mate. No worries on getting back. Shall let you know how things go in the smoke.

Nik- am hoping once Ian works his magic on the first comic of the BB's I can take a run at one further on down the line, but whatever happens the comics will definitely be part of the world of the animated series so we need to keep continuity there. If you can imagine retro lounge pop sensibilities we're looking at a spooky tiki take on that! Thanks for the kind words though fella :-)

I confess, I'm Ulf's pimp!
BTW zombie wise did anyone see 'Bogus Dead'? Bit hit and miss but had fantastic Tom Hart and Graham Annable strips. Bet you've seen it in P45 INJ, it's where I got mine.

I. N. J. Culbard said...

Likewise. Agree, bit hit and miss.

Telstar (with the Dave Cooper cover and silver interiors) was better. Had a Tom Gould story in there.

Jo Bling said...

Yum.... Dave Cooper....

Some of his curvy lasses are already a bit zomboriffic as I recall, chomping great lumps out of each others rumps!

Shall look for "Bogus Dead"

paulhd said...

Oooh Dave Cooper, brilliant. Think one of the Pip and Norton stories has a real (not)live zombie in it. Never got round to picking up Telstar, did get follow up Superior though which was a really strong collection.
If you want to save some money here's the Graham Annable strip from Bogus Dead (although then you'd miss out on some of the other nice bits!) http://www.grickle.com/Annable_ComicArt09.htm
oops, sorry, it's only 1 page.... nice though.

Jo Bling said...

You say Bogus Dead is an actual graphic novel? Tres nice artwork there!

I. N. J. Culbard said...

the pip and norton story is about a zombie girlfriend. quite funny it is too.

Jo Bling said...

I have seen the pip n norton zombie story- it has a ring of familiarity now. Quite sweet as I recall too!

I. N. J. Culbard said...

yeah, it was in Scatterbrain (Dark Horse).

Wow - a lotta creative stuff going on here Mr. Jobling! Thanks for stoppin' by my blog and the kind words through e-mail.

Disco Dead has my interest right off the bat here. Love the style and you'd be stupid to not to love a good zombie tale.

Dig the monster sketches too.

Congrats on the healthy family - it's quite an accomplishment for an artist to love so many things in his life and have time for all :)

Take care,

-bob.
