ODD ONE OUT

PIG PILE

COWHIDE

These paintings were done as part of an art show some time ago, my first individual one as I recall in Sam's Place Coffee House in Middlesbrough, UK. My favourite is still probably PIG PILE, the middle piece. They're all pretty big pieces and you might be able to see a peculiar texture to the artwork. This is derived from the fact that they are all painted on roofing felt, a surface that I love to paint on as it lends itself well to my drybrush technique when I'm working in layers. I used to do a heck of a lot of work on sheets of sandpaper, getting the same look, but I was limited to the scale I could work to. Roofing felt took that obstacle away. Plus I have the funkiest looking garden shed in Christendom now!

Dug these pieces out as they make me think of the kids. Not that my kids look like farmyard animals, you understand. But these paintings are pretty kid friendly, unlike some of my others. Emma and I are off to see the consultant tomorrow to find out what our next pesky baby is playing at in Mummy's tummy. Due date 8th October. Woohah!!!

That cow piccy, here's a tip,try painting the cow after the tree, that way the tree won't be covering the cow ! Don't worry I'll keep you right.

I do like the pig pile but can I have my roofing felt back now as the bad weather will set in soon ?

October 8th? That's two days after the most important day of the year!

The 8th of the 8th (given how October was initially the eighth month).... possible weighing 8lbs, born at 8 o'clock.

The eight immortals. It's also an allagoric number in the crucifixion and Beatitudes. The Dharmacakra (you Dharma initiative junkies) has eight spokes (LOST yet?), the eightfold path in Buddhism has eight steps, Hanukkah is eight days long, tarot eight means Strength, eight is a lucky number in China due to its phonic relation to "prosperity" or "wealth", in the Discworld, 8 is considered a holy number, there are 8 planets in our solar system.

Cheers Paul. Yep, October has flown into focus for the family Bling. Cue lots of frantic baby preperations.

Octopussessesses have eight limbs...

I'll get my snorkel...

Sarah! Thanks for the kindly words m'dear. And thanks to Glazy for the colouring in tips!

btw - 6th October is the INJun's birthday, for those out there who hadn't deduced said fact from his cryptic comment...

6th October? Libra? Good man, join the club!

Oh, and your piccies are nice too Mr. Jobling. I have the urge to run a ballpoint over a banana skin now with all this talk of textured mediums.

I've not heard of people painting on roofing felt before but a mate of mine tried painting on Vanessa Feltz...he's still sedated most of the day !

So do I have to wish INJ happy birthday now or wait ?

Librans, eh? Can spot them a mile off. We have them in our family too. Very in touch with their feminine side, so my Auntie Derek tells me.....

Glazy :-D

Congrats on everything, Mr. Bling. And man, those painting are really lovely. That dim and shadowy technique you’re using is topnotch. It’s evocative of a murky childhood dream or something.

Hey Curtis, thanks for dropping by! Had completely overlooked your link to Twisted Tales, thankyou very much. But alas as you have seen, all went haywire and thus the blog with Bruce and Tea Break is now the daddy, so thats the fellah you want to be linking.

Tanks!

These are great Curtis, The texture is fantastic!

Justin & Josh- thanks fellas, as for technique it's something I've used for a long time, the textured surface. My natural painting style is dry brush, working up layers of paint from dark to light- having a heavy surface to work on only aids this.

Alina, Brain and Gregory- cheers m'dears!

Nik- will amend the link then. "Tea Break". Too funny! :-D

What sort of paint do you use when you paint on a material like roofing felt ?

hi there,

Very nice paintings here.
Wish you luck.

glazey - it's still acrylics - he just sprays the felt first with a base coaty stuff.

hey feena! Thanks for stopping by, You still surfing via the TV??

Jo Bling said...

Yep, further to Mrs Bling's comment, I spray the felt with an acrylic undercoat first so that the paint has something to adhere to - the tarry nature of the felt doesn't readily lend itself to being painted upon.

Hi Feena :-) Thanks m'dear, how's the novel writing coming along?

Shahrzad, many thanks!
